king alexander palm

Very unique and elegant. Three Picabeen palms dress up the entrance to this home.

Picabeen palms are very unique. We’ve planted them in a couple of our landscapes with great success. They even survived the freezing winter of 2010. This makes them a viable alternative to adonidia Christmas palm. 80% of adonidia palms were lost during this same cold winter. Picabeen palms resemble King Alexander palms but with slight differences in the structure of the stem. Let us know if you would be interested in having these beautiful palms in your landscape.

Palm Holocaust. Dead palms everywhere in St. Petersburg Landscapes.

April 23, 2010admin No Comments »

This week we have found so many dead palms! Palms we thought would make it are now dying. By far the worst affected are adonidia’s(Christmas palms).

freeze damaged palm in st petersburg

Thought this one would make it? No Way! This palm which froze in January is now completely dead. $400 down the drain.

It seems now that they are starting to grow they are getting infested with fungus that rots their hearts. If the shaft is not green and the palm is not growing give the middle shaft that is coming out of the heart a little tug. If it’s loose your palm is dead. Many will just pull out all rotted and they give off a disgusting smell. This is so sad. Specimens that we cultivated for years are now rotting and dying since the WX is warm. If the heart rots the best thing is to dig it out or cut the palm down. So far in my lawn I have lost 1 Christmas, 1 coconut and 1 big beautiful bottle palm. Breaks my heart. I think I will plant more hardy specimens like robellinis in the future. Tropical palms will all eventually get blasted by cold here, if not next year then sometime in the future. That was the coldest Florida winter ever. The coldest it got at my house was 30 but it was sustained and night after night of 37 and frost for two months and now that it’s warm the damage from fungus is getting worse by the day. If you need your palms replaced please give us a call at 727 455 0078.
